Innovative missions today demand contextualized ministries shaped by local churches -- not one-size-fits-all imported strategies implemented by professionals, a missions professor from Texas and a pastor from Australia told a focus group at the Baptist World Congress
Mike Stroope, missions professor at Baylor University's George W. Truett Theological Seminary, and John Beasy, senior pastor of Enfield Baptist Church in Adelaide and national president of the Baptist Union of Australia, led a focus group during the 20th Congress of the Baptist World Alliance.

Garland Reflects on Stint as BU's Interim President

Dr. David Garland, interim president of Baylor, held his office for about two years. With that, he never lost his love of the small things life offers.
"I will miss my parking space at the Ferrell Center. That is very nice," Garland said. "I will miss the staff. The things I am most proud of were the things that I was able to do for individual staff, professors and students."
"And I will miss the ability to be able to do those kinds of things, make decisions that I felt very proud of and that had a positive impact on various people's lives. That, to me, brought me the most gratification and joy."
Garland has served as Baylor's interim president since June 2008, when Dr. John Lilley was forced out of office.

New Testament Stories Shape Christian Character, Gregory Says

Stories describe the essence of human life, and New Testament stories shape moral and spiritual character, Joel Gregory told participants at the annual T.B. Maston Lectures at Hardin-Simmons University's Logsdon Seminary.
Gregory discussed "The Power of Narrative and Character Formation" at this year's lectures, which honor the memory of Maston, a pioneer in Christian ethics and longtime professor at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
"Narratives ... include a story and a storyteller, manifest movement through time, require cause-and-effect relationships in a plot and ... define the very nature of human existence," explained Gregory, professor of preaching at Baylor University's Truett Theological Seminary.

Truett Student, Emily Snider, Has Paper Selected for Emerging Scholars Forum of the Hymn Society

Master of Divinity/Master of Music in Church Music student Emily Snider, whose paper on "Hymns and Doctrine: God's Transcendence and Immanence" has been selected for presentation at the Emerging Scholars Forum of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada annual conference this summer. Emily is completing her second year as a dual M.Div./M.M. in Church Music student.
